Second Language
Research on learning strategies for language learners has been based on strategies used by successful language learners. O'Malley, et al. (1985) divided language learning strategies into three main subcategories: Metacognitive (monitoring, evaluating, advance organizers, self-management), cognitive (direct strategies such as repetition, note taking, deduction, imagery, elaboration, inferencing), and socioaffective strategies (transacting with others, cooperation and question for clarification) (p. 4). More recently Mattarima and Hamdan (2011) agreed that metacognitive, cognitive and socioaffectives strategies should be inserted into lesson plans.
